Discrete Athlete!

100% Solid State (Stout) Of The Art Amplifier…

  • It all started in 1997, with Spicehead 12 (picture below), a 12 watts valve/solid state hybrid…

Here we go now. Just about 25 years later. This time 100% solid state—still discrete, athlete, complete!

BACKGROUND

With that said this is not just another solid state amplifier! This is a different bird—to be compared to them valve/tube amplifiers of your choice!

Progress… (13 Aug)

STATUS:

8 JUNE: Working all the time to get a good sounding, tactile, solid prototype up running soon…

3 JULY: The first prototype has been tested for quite some time—which so far seems very promising…

8 JULY: Not much changed since 5 days back. Still seems very promising…

20 JULY: To explain the similarities/differencies between the original "Spicehead 12" (1997) and "Himmelstrutz Eight"  (2022) two important things are to mention:

1.  Spicehead 12  (1997) was equipped with 2 preamp tubes—with a solid state 12 watts CLASS A/B mosfet power amp—and 5 user controls: GAIN, BASS, MID, TREBLE & VOLUME (without an effects loop) which made it suitable/good sounding clean and also distorted (as the GAIN control was there). The casing/cabinet for this model was never finished as the electronic/mechanical construction seemed a bit unproportional…

2.  Himmelstrutz 8  (2022) is a 100% solid state unit (no tubes)—with a solid state 8 watts CLASS A/B mosfet power amp—and 4 user controls: BASS, MID, TREBLE & VOLUME (with an effects loop) which makes “8” also ideal as a platform, why not particularly for the Himmelstrutz pedals! The casing/cabinet for this model is the Himmelstrutz “Standard”, MXR sized heavy zinc/aluminum box, which now seems very proportional...

22 JULY: Today 2 prototype units of Himmelstrutz 8  was catched up @ the Himmelstrutz Factory by a guy who is a good musician, a gear pro/sound expert to evaluate why this amazing project was started…

26 JULY: Let us now talk about the Himmelstrutz AutoStandby. This is serious stuff:

Himmelstrutz 8  is a guitar amplifier (may as well be a bass amplifier) which means voltage & current (=power) is needed to drive the speakers which makes you hear the sound in the room where the sound is generated or somewhere else. The possibility to drive these speakers, wherever they may be, which in Himmelstrutz 8  is performed by a Himmelstrutz Original Designed Discrete Class A/B Mosfet power amplifier which means some **idle power/heat/waste is also generated.

** To minimize this idle power/heat/waste as good as possible (to save energy/to save the planet at least a little) Himmelstrutz 8  has a built in Himmelstrutz Original Designed (1997) AutoStandby function which makes Himmelstrutz 8  automatically get into AutoStandby mode (=sleep/switched off/no heat/minimal idle power/minimal waste) if the player (you) don’t play your instrument for about 90 seconds. This way the amplifier will go quiet/get cold as long as you don’t play/is asleep/gone for vacation etc…

Note: We don’t prefer to use the efficient, modern and so popular Class D Chip Technology for this our audio as the distortion/harmonics generated in these kind of amp solutions—when driven hard!—doesn’t sound good/musical in our sensitive Himmelstrutz ears and as Himmelstrutz 8  is supposed to be driven hard, to take advantage of the feel and harmonic contents in the overdriven landscapes we have chosen to use a more primary, old school power amp topology, the same kind as used in many valve creations (class  A/B!)—simple rock’n roll basics…

27 Aug: Working to solve a simple  hum issue which so far seems not that simple…

11 Sep: Continuing with that  hum adventure

This Is 8!
